A WARNING ABOUT LILY TOXICITY TO CATS

$
0
0
I am posting a news letter I just received from my vet.

A Message from LeGallais Veterinary Hospital -Lily Toxicity
April showers bring May flowers...  Unfortunately for cats,
spring also  brings lilies, a fragrant flower popular in gardens
and as Easter decorations. Lilies contain toxins that are
profoundly toxic to felines. Just a nibble or even a sip from a
vase can be enough to cause irreparable kidney damage and
even death. Cats may be poisoned by eating any part of the
lily flower. This includes the stem, flower, and even the pollen.
Cats often brush up against a lily, resulting in pollen collecting
on their fur. The cat later ingests the pollen while licking its fur
during grooming.

Signs of lily toxicity include vomiting, lethargy, drooling,
and appetite loss. Without prompt treatment, cats will develop
kidney failure within 36-72 hours. Initial treatment requires
aggressive IV fluid therapy and  gastrointestinal decontamination.
If signs are noticed early and decontamination is achieved within
6 hours of ingestion, most cats will not become ill. Treatment
delay of more than 18 hours after ingestion almost always results
in acute renal failure. Mortality rates range from 50-100% of cats
that progress to renal failure.

As Easter approaches , the Staff at LeGallais Veterinary Hospital

would like to remind pet owners to keep lilies and other kidney
toxic plants out of their home and gardens.

For more information on pet toxins please visit the Pet Poison
From the Staff at LeGallais Veterinary Hospital, we wish
you and your family a Happy Easter!

I know this to be true, having sadly lost a beautiful silly furball named Flip
after she ingested a very small amount of lily pollen from a bouquet of cut
flowers including lilies. Unfamiliar with this hazard for cats, by the time we
realized the problem, it was too late.

Ever Wondered "Why do I need to block?"

$

Blocking can take a lot of time, but it is so worth it. Immediately below is an unblocked swatch of Shetland Ruffles, a shawl from one of my favourite designers, Kieran Foley

Witness how blocking opens the lace and accentuates the curves created by the stitch.

You can see several beautiful samples of Shetland ruffles on Ravelry  http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/shetland-ruffles

I love Kieran's designs. He frequently uses self-striping yarns, especially Noro and Zauberball. The combination of striping yarns and stitch patterns which curve and undulate are just incredible.

He also uses dropped stitches in many of his shawls. I have just finished my first (but definitely not may last) Kieran Foley Project, Shogun.

I enjoyed this project so much. When I first began, I was misreading the pattern and could not figure out what was wrong. I e-mailed a question to Kieran, who by the way, lives in Ireland, and I got an answer back in less than 2 hours. After that it was smooth sailing. I am offering this project as a class in the new Spring Session beginning in April.

Description
Let me introduce you to Kieran Foley, an Irish designer whose work I admire. Designer Site

I am currently knitting his Shogun Shawl and I love it. The pattern is both charted and written – easy to knit whichever style you prefer. With a couple of “keeping track tips”, this project, with chevron patterning and dropped stitches, is not as difficult as it appears. And if you are a colour person, fond of Noro or Zauberball, this design is perfectly suited for self -striping yarns.

Purl Soho

Today is my day off. A lazy start to the day, checking e-mail and then on to what is trending on Ravelry. With nothing on my agenda but house work, it was so easy to fall down the Ravelry rabbit hole. It started with a new cowl from Purl Soho..........

          Purl Soho
Purl Soho is a fabulous little yarn and quilting shop in the Soho district  of Manhattan (I think). I have been there, but to be honest, I was not truly sure exactly where I was in terms of the various New York boroughs. Purl Soho has an impressive on-line and Ravelry presence due in no small part to its fabulous FREE patterns. Their patterns are simple and classic. The instructions are so clear and thorough. They often use tricky little stitches which might be confusing but offer extensive photo tutorials to help you understand exactly what you need to do.

http://www.purlbee.com/

This is the cowl that started it- CROSSHATCH

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/crosshatch-cowl-2

Once I got started I kept on going. They have 7 pages of patterns on Ravelry, most of them FREE.
I am intrigued by the interesting stitch in JASMINE SCARF below.

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/jasmine-scarf-3

We have just ordered some beautiful new mohair for the fall. This simple little SPRINGTIME BANDANA will be perfect. But I may not wait, we have some Silk Whisper mohair and silk which has been calling my name for  months, just waiting or the right design.

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/springtime-bandana

We have just restocked one of our favourite sock yarns CoBaSi. CoBaSi is a blend of cotton, bamboo, silk and nylon.

Beautiful especially for summer socks. So perfect for the little ankle socks below,  LACE ANKLETS.

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lace-anklets-2

PRE-WRAPPED WRAP is a blend of wrap and over sized shrug. It looks so comfy  and after viewing the instruction, it appears to be a very simple knit accomplishable by even a new knitter.

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pre-wrapped-wrap

Many knitters will recognize their BANDANA COWL pattern, currently  #3 Cowl on Ravelry.

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/bandana-cowl

I love their CANDY-CANE BEDROOM SOCKS. They might be on my list for Grand Lake (my family cottage where I visit every July) knitting this summer.

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/candy-cane-bedroom-socks

They have a few crochet designs as well.

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/granny-square-slippers-2

And APRIL SHOWERS SCARF might be just the design I am looking for to use as a sample for Bella Lino, a linen/cotton blend  and one of our favourite yarns from Classic Elite.

Usually when I log in to Ravelry, I skip right to the patterns section. Today I decided to scroll down on the opening page and see what was there. Today to my delight I found a bundle of photos of pet models for various projects. I LOVE IT WHEN RAVELLERS POST PICTURES WITH THEIR PROJECTS ON THEIR PETS.

One of my all time favourite projects is the Elizabeth Zimmerman Baby Surprise Jacket.

I have not tried but I suspect none of my cats would co-operate with this.

WORLD WIDE KNIT IN PUBLIC DAY

$

Have you ever heard of yarn bombing? I have seen it, but I have never tried it. So I am looking forward to our planned celebrations for this year's World Wide Knit in Public Day (WWKIPD), Saturday, June 13th.

First of all , WWKIPD is an annual celebration of knitting/crochet. Knitters  and crocheters, all over the world,  gather in public to knit or crochet and enjoy the company of other knitters. World Wide Knit in Public Day was started in 2005 by Danielle Landes. It began as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company. Knitting is such a solitary act that it’s easy to knit alone somewhere and sink into your work without thinking about all the other knitters out there. Neighbors could spend all their lives never knowing that the other knits.  This a specific day to get out of your house and go to a local event (with your knitting in tow) just for you and people like you.

World Wide Knit in Public Day!

– Better Living through stitching together!

WWKIP Day is unique, in that it’s the largest knitter run event in the world.
Each local event is put together by a volunteer or a group of volunteers. It started with just a couple of events and is now celebrated by hundreds, perhaps thousands  of events/groups all over the world.

The date this year is Saturday, June 13, 2015

Serenity Knits has celebrated WWKIPD the last 4 years. Each year we have had a  theme of sorts. One year we had knitting races - no one beat Gabriela. Another year we knit for charity. This year we decided we would like to try YARN BOMBING - urban graffiti for knitters. Just google yarn bombing images and you will be amazed at the examples of yarn bombing creations/art. It is fun and colourful, crocheting as well as knitting.

Some knitters become very creative. I love this little guy.

The majority of yarn bombings are trees, but nothing is safe from ambitious knitters.

How cute is this?

Some knitters commit to incredible detail with fabulous results.

Statues are popular yarn bombing "victims".

Bike racks.....

One creative group added creatures to their trees.

We plan to start off small with the two trees that are either side of the plaza entrance. It should be fun. We hope you will join us, it is supposed to be a beautiful sunny day. If you have yarn of our own you would care to donate, great, but we have a stash of colourful yarns you can use. Bring a chair or a blanket and join us knitting in public out under our "victim" trees. We will have some light refreshments but feel free to bring a lunch and stay all day. We will be knitting from 11 until 3.

I have added a few more flowers and have found a great leaf pattern on Ravelry
This  is a very simple little pattern and very easy to adapt to different sizes.

The vine is just a 4 stitch I-cord.

I am happy to see our little bird house has survived a couple of pretty windy rain storms. The battery in the motion activated chirping bird has run out of juice but the bird is hanging in there.

The bird house was a free pattern on Ravelry.
The only adjustment I made was to single crochet a few rounds around the opening to give it a bit of stability.
We are not finished, lots more to come.

My Garden

$

I spent some time this past weekend working on my garden. My garden does double duty. It is my garden retreat to read, knit or just relax. It is also a hangout for a clowder of local feral cats. ( I know that term for a group of cats, thanks to Big Bang. Some of you may remember the episode where Sheldon began to collect cats to compensate for missing Amy when they briefly broke up)

I do have some nice flowers.

But I am more amused and entertained with all the places my various outdoor felines choose to nap or hide.

The picture is a little blurry, but yes that is couple of grey kittens in the storm candle holder.

It all started with this beauty now named Meredith Grey Cat. A neighbour appears to have moved away and just left her behind; by accident or on purpose, I don't know. I wasn't sure what to do but began to occasionally put out food for her. She was soon coming around almost every day. When I realized she was pregnant for the second time, I couldn't stand it any more. By that time, we had become friends, she would let me pet her and would come when she saw me putting out food. With no struggle at all, I scooped her up, took her to the vet for a check up and she has been with me ever since. That litter resulted in 5 beautiful kittens. I found homes for 4 and kept one. But the previous litter has resulted in an ever increasing clowder of cats in my neighbourhood. I have been trapping and surrendering them to the OSPCA. So if any of you are looking for kittens or young cats, I know there are some pretty cute ones available.

Since her inclusion in our family, she has tried to make herself helpful. She enjoys assisting with blocking.

But mostly, she just snuggles and looks cute.

For some reason, crochet seems to lend itself pretty easily to some outrageously ugly stuff.

And when you thought it could not get any worse, crochet with eyelash yarn.

Ugly Christmas Sweaters have become popular but I am not sure this crafter intended to create an ugly sweater, it just turned out that way.

Most of us remember the crochet from the 60's which was truly awful.
